New Computer

Postby Cpl Boden on Wed Jun 07, 2006 9:44 pm

Well, I've had to speed up the build of my new computer.  Today I tried 8 times to load BF2 and my computer crashed every single time.  The last of my parts should be here sometime next week and then I only have to throw it all together and go through the painful part of reloading all my stuff.  Here are the specs for my new computer.

Athlon 64 X2 4600
XP Pro
Liquid Cooling-The computer is in my bedroom and I need a quiet computer.  Also, the room is the hottest in the house.
650 watt power supply
NVidia nForce 4 SLI X16 Mobo
2 GB ram pc 3200 dual channel
150 GB raptor hard drive
16X dual layer DVD with litescribe
256 MB 7900 GT- Don't want to go overboard due to Direct X 10 coming out soon.
SoundBlaster X-Fi High Definition with XRam 7.1 audio
28-1 media reader

I'm not sure if I missed anything.  This is the first liquid cooled system for me.  Wish me luck on this part.

You know, my motto is "why make 1 when you can make 2"?

And my other motto is "I love free stuff".

I'm not sure what you mean by this.  If it has to do with the 64 X2 4600, the X2 just means it is dual processor.

Yea.  I'm still debating whether to install it after all the problems you have had with it.  As of right now, I can still take it back.

My understanding is it has to do with the type of hardware it is in and the demands the card puts on those resources. My mobo is old ASUS dual AMD with the AMD 768 Southbridge chipset and probably is part of the problem. I have recently learned the AMD 768 Southbridge has a PCI bandwidth issues and the xfi card pushes those limits in games that use EAX.

You can read up on the xfi woes in this thread. It is a continuation of a super long thread...

I too will be following you in a build of a new machine. I came home last night to a non-functioning Viewsonic P815. It gave up the ghost when I turned it on - 3 loud snaps and it went dark...can't complain - I have had this monitor longer then some of team members have had PC's. :)

Now... do i get a 16:9 format LCD? Those 24" are looking pretty good!

Gateway FPD2185W
- HD-ready with DCDi
- 4 port powered USB hub
- VGA, component, S-Video, and composite video inputs
-1680x1050 resolution (16:10 widescreen)
- 8ms response time
- contrast ratio 1000:1
- DVI-D with HDCP input
- Screen rotation

Excellent monitor. Ranks right up there with the Dell monitors and a little easier on the wallet. I use two of these monitors in a dual monitor setup. PC Gaming gave them 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow, serious monitor action.  Right now I can't justify the expense for monitors in that range.  When my current one goes down, then I'll look at whats available at the time.

By the way, my computer problems on Wedneday and Thursday were due to a loose sata cord.  Figured it out after the last crash on Thursday.  On reboot I showed no hard drive.  I adjusted the sata cord and there it was again.  No problems since.  This does not fix the loading crash.

Sounds like data corruption.
Try a chkdsk /f on the drive in question.
Might require you to do a reboot depending on which drive you are checking (files in use).
