Is a program complaining it isn't on?
What channel do you have the drive on - primary or secondary?

Keep in mind a cd-rw drive normally can't be on same channel as your main hard drive (if your drive is ata) and best to be primary on the secondary channel.

it is set as primary on the secondary channel now.  when i updated the bios it worked but then for some unknown reason it turned off again.  i have gotten it to work before when i uninstalled and reinstalled the ide controller.  freaking drive is screwy i guess.

Welcome to Plug and Pray  :D
Make sure drive is jumper set to master and not CS or cable select.
