When the x-fi is working right it sounds great. Here is an interview with one of the developers of BF2.

I have had issues with my x-fi pro (random LOUD sounds) when starting BF2 while TS is running and with the MIC input changing when game exits.
I have seen the mic changing input with CS:S on map changes. BF2 is inconsistent.
Other then that the ambient sounds and the effects while in tanks , tunnels and fellow squad members is very cool when EAX is enabled. Worth it just for that.
In CS:S Hidden it is creepy with the ambient sounds especially when the Hidden taunts you! :)
